Jessie Reyez Talks Calvin Harris, Crying On Stage, and… Cheerleading!

Jessie Reyez is having quite the year… an unforgettable performance at the BET Awards, as well as on ‘Fallon’, plus high profile collaborations with Romeo Santos and Calvin Harris. Jessie is on the fast track to becoming one of those ‘overnight sensations,’ that was years in the making.

Her current single “Figures” (first heard in the New York market on 92.3 AMP) is another reason why Reyez is being dubbed the most intriguing newbie in the biz.

She rolled through to the radio station fresh off her performance on ‘Fallon’. What you might not have known while watching her stunning performance on The Tonight Show is, she was EXTREMELY sick! When I asked Jessie if she does anything different while preparing for a performance when she’s under the weather, she said, “The only thing that changes is just, like, a copious amount of vitamins that I start taking that I wouldn’t take on a regular basis. Other than that, just tea and warming up and praying.”

We went on to talk about what other fellow artists have slid into her DMs following that jaw-dropping BET Awards performance, why she chose to bleep out the name of the person she’s addressing in her “Gatekeeper” short film, and what song never fails to make her cry when she’s performing it live.

Peep the full interview above.

What I loved the most about Jessie is how grounded she seems to be, and grateful for everything that’s currently happening with her career. Her upbringing plays a major role in that. She has parents that have supported her from day one, and have taught her to cherish every blessing that comes her way… which is a good thing, because my prediction is the blessings are gonna become hard to keep track of soon.
