Watch Bebe Rexha Sing Opera Version of ‘Despacito’

Singer Bebe Rexha is currently enjoying the success of her upcoming All Your Fault: Pt. 2 EP single “The Way I Are (Dance With Somebody)” featuring rapper Lil Wayne.

During her visit at 92.3 AMP Radio in New York City this morning to discuss her summer hit, Bebe also took on a challenge that the Shoboy Show had for her so early in the day. Could she put her own spin on another song of the summer, Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito?”

The twist – please sing in Spanish BUT also call upon your opera training.

And she nailed it!

The Brooklyn-born, Staten Island, NY raised singer/songwriter explained her musical background from her early school days playing trumpet while also teaching herself guitar and piano. It was in High School while living on Staten Island (Tottenville, represent!) where she also joined the choir, discovering her voice was a coloratura soprano.

During a 2015 interview with Fuse TV, Rexha explained that operatic singing was the only form of expression her strict father approved of for a young lady, but she always knew that she would be a pop singer.

“For all the girls out there who were in the Marching Band — I played trumpet, which was not the coolest,” Bebe said about her humble beginnings. “You do you! You’re beautiful just the way you are and you’re going to blossom into a beautiful woman one day.”

Rexha will be performing the Good Morning America Concert Series on Friday, June 30th and she is incredibly excited for her parents to take a trip into the city to be a part of such a momentous occasion.

“I still feel like I have a long way to go, I’m still relatively new to the world, but it’s really amazing,” Rexha says about her journey in the industry thus far. “Grew up in New York City, and now my mom and dad get to take the Verrazzano Bridge … and watch me on Good Morning America.”
