Macklemore is back as a solo artist, releasing music without Ryan Lewis for the first time since 2009’s The Unplanned Mixtape. 92.3 AMP Radio’s Niko spoke with Mackelmore about his new single “Glorious,” featuring Skylar Grey.
“The original idea was she would write the hook. She sat down at the piano and started to sing and the minute she cut the vocal it was like, ‘Oh, this is the hook we’re gonna go with,'” says Macklemore. “I was like, ‘We need Skylar on this.’ It’s not just a writing credit. I want her on this record.”
Skylar Gray’s inclusion on the record can be attributed to Macklemore’s independence from major record label intervention, saying “The politics of the industry, that happens so often. Honestly, if I was on a label, maybe they would have been like ‘We need to get this person on to re-sing it.’ But … it’s still independent. I get all those shots. I love what Skylar did and I love her as an artist, so it worked out perfect.”
Independence as a recording artist gives Macklemore more than the opportunity to choose who he works with. It also allows him to prioritize his time accordingly.
“That’s another liberty I get to take as an independent artist. I’m in the studio every day, but I’m also with my daughter,” says Macklemore. “It’s important for me to put being a human first and the music second. If you put the music first and try to be the human second, that’s when the art starts to suffer.”
“Glorious” is available now. Macklemore’s new album is currently untitled and without a release date.
