Selena Gomez is riding high following the release of her latest single “Bad Liar.” Today during the #12MIX, Selena called up Niko on-air to chat about the single, what led her to release it now, and her process in it’s creation.

“The crazy thing is that I’m so happy that it exists in the world because I’ve had the song for over a year. I’ve been in the studio for eight months to a year now and it’s been so nerve-racking to figure out what the next evolution’s going to be.”

That evolution, it turns out, had a bit of a retro feel. Music fans may recognize a familiar beat in the song — namely the Talking Heads classic, “Psycho Killer.” Selena explains why:

“We sampled one of the greatest bands of all time, so it had a little bit of a process that was different from some of my other songs… we wanted to make sure we got the approval which, obviously, was very important. I don’t think the song would exist if we didn’t.”

“It was a new thing for me, but I did want to try something that was fresh and different and it worked out really well. I think the lyrics, too just came out in a way where it’s catchy and hypnotic and romantic.”

Selena is excited to keep bringing surprises to her fans and even hinted at a little collaboration in the works — without going into any details of course.
