Jax Jones Explains Inspiration Behind “I Got U’ and “You Don’t Know Me”

UK producer and singer Jax Jones dropped by the Adorama Live Theater today to join Shoboy & Nina on the StubHub Stage for a Facebook LIVE session, and we certainly learned a lot from their chat — the least of which being that he’s got a “government name” that gives Akon a run for his money!

Born Timucin Fabian Kwong Wah Aluo, Jax Jones explained that he took his stage name from a cockney slang term meaning “on your own.”

Although Jax has studied classical guitar since a young age and plays multiple instruments, he certainly hasn’t forgotten the help he received at the beginning of his career when he teamed up with fellow Brit Duke Dumont for their collaborative single “I Got U” as well as the tracks “Won’t Look Back” and “Ocean Drive.”

“You can only make music that’s an extension of your personality,” says Jones. “I guess that’s what I try to project.. a good vibe, good feeling — and it all comes from a real place.”

“‘I Got U’ was a time in my life,” Jones explains, “when everything was kind of down for a second, and then I met my fiance… I was in the honeymoon stage, all loved up… Boys II Men time… so what better to sample Whitney Houston and put some steel drums in there?!”

Jax also says he was inspired to make “I Got U” by the viral videos of people getting married to Chris Brown’s “Forever.”

“The same with ‘You Don’t Know Me,’ — I just wanted a tune that, you know, you see those Instagram selfies and people put the quotes on there — there’s always a purpose!”
