Julia Michaels began her songwriting career at 16 and, with the help of multi-platinum selling songwriter and mentor Lindy Robbins, has had the opportunity to write pop hits for artists like Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, and Ed Sheeran, just to name a few from her long list on songwriting credits.
“A lot of it is networking and word of mouth. You work with one person and they’re like, ‘She really cool. You should work with her,’ and you just develop relationships with people,” Michaels says of her growing resume. Networking and word of mouth has certainly worked, considering her biggest supporter happens to the first artist Michaels’ has written for: Selena Gomez.
“First artist actually was Selena [Gomez],” says Michaels. “When I was 19 she recorded a song that I had written with Lindy called ‘Slow Down.’ It was the first single I ever had. I’ve had a lot of firsts with her.”
“She’s great. She’s probably one of the most supportive people that I know,” adds Michaels. “When I told her that I was going to put the song (‘Issues’) out, she was just over the moon.” Gomez shared her excitement on Instagram back in January while in the studio with Michaels.
