Talk about a big “oops.” In 1971, a group of scientists thought they could burn off methane gases by LIGHTING IT ON FIRE! And now, this 230 foot crater has been burning for 46 years in Turkmenistan. They thought it would burn for a couple of weeks, tops. Smh. So if you wanna visit this un-natural phenomenon, there’s no rush. It’s not going anywhere.
Oh, and how did the crater first form? That’s another “oops.” The scientists starting drilling, but what they didn’t know was that they were drilling over a HUGE cavernous pocket of natural gas. The result? A 230 foot sink hole.
