Coldplay might not be the first name you’d think of when discussing electronic music, but part of the beauty in the genre is that it can sample any from any number of genres when creating its own. That case can be made for 20-year-old DJ and producer Kungs. The French mixer talked about his earliest mixes and influences during 92.3 AMP Radio’s latest AMP Live Sessions event.
“It as a remix of Coldplay, the track ‘Clocks,'” Kungs tells midday host Niko about creating his first mix. “I just took the guitar and vocals on YouTube and I made my edit with it.”
Kungs — whose track “This Girl” with Cookin’ on 3 Burners reached #1 in France and #2 in the UK — further discussed the template, or lack thereof, for creating music.
“It depends. Sometimes I just take a little sample of a track and I make everything after this or sometimes I just keep the whole guitar or bass line,” says Kungs. “We don’t have any rules to mix, just, like, you feel it.”
The fluid nature of Kungs’ creative process also applies to his source for inspiration; he finds it anywhere he hears it.
“I just listen to something and then I tell to myself, ‘This should sound amazing like this or like this,” then I go into the studio and do my thing on my computer, or even on tour or in the plane.”
